How to Run a Successful Twitter Contest

On Twitter, brand engagement and building buzz to your Twitter account is the most important thing you can do. By running a successful contest, you will generate hundreds of new followers and will keep your fans loyal and engaged. But how do you run a successful Twitter contest that is interesting and fun? Here are a few things you can try.

The Sweepstakes Contest
This is probably the most obvious contest, but sweepstakes have been working for years. Winners are chosen through a lottery at random through a draw. One way of doing this is having a user Retweet the post to all of their followers to enter the contest. This way, all of their thousands of followers see your post, thus spreading it to a huge new audience, which will result in more submissions and more followers. Alternatively, you could set up a landing page on your website that is themed to Twitter and have them fill out a small application or sign up for your mailing list in order to be entered into the sweepstakes.

The Creative Answer Contest

This strategy has been proven by marketing giants like KFC. Simply post a contest with a question, and have your users answer with as creative of an answer as possible. The organizers of the contest will be the judge of who wins.
For example, KFC asked why they should receive a $20,000 scholarship, and to include #KFCscholar hashtag in their tweet (to track the submissions), and the winning answer was by Amanda Russel: “#KFCScholar Hey Colonel! Your scholarship’s the secret ingredient missing from my recipe for success! Got the grades, drive, just need cash”

The Photo Contest

This is a great way to generate lots of excellent photos of customers with your product or supporting your company. Have your followers send in a photo with your hash tag doing whatever you ask with your product or brand, and choose the funniest or most creative photo as the winner. As with the last method, the winner of this contest is chosen by the organizers.
Whichever one of these three methods you choose, be sure to have your followers include a unique hash tag of your choice with their submission (example, #MyCompanyContest) so you can effectively track their submissions.
